My University assignment was to remake a retro character and produce a game ready asset from it. I chose to make Vivi from Final Fantasy 9 as he is one of my favourites and thought his design would be a lot of fun to recreate using the skills I had learned. I started by researching the character and created my own concept art to refer from and plan each step. Base mesh was created in Zbrush with clothing blocked out in Maya. I used Zbrush to make high polys to bake with in Substance Painter. All texturing was created in Substance Painter. I also used a combination of 3DCoat and Maya to do the retopology.
This was such a fun challenge and I'm happy I was able to overcome some problems and push my knowledge of Zbrush even further.
Overall the game ready version is 17k tris and 700 tris for the staff.
Vivi is made up of 2 2048k texture sets and 1 2048 texture set for the staff.
