This project was a little different as it was going to be made with tablet and mobile devices in mind. For my student team "Seafoam Studios" we were allowed to come up with what ever style or direction so long as the final product met the criteria of being an endless runner.
We decided to take a 2D side scroller approach to this task while having games such as Alto's Adventure in mind. While brainstorming the art direction we explored the idea of using real life materials to craft our assets. This led to experiments with crumpled card and paper scanned in to overlay onto our designs in photoshop. We definitely took some inspiration from punch and judy, puppet shows and games such as Paper Mario.
We really loved the idea and continued to develop it further for our endless runner that featured a guy who had fallen overboard where the player would have to take advantage of the waves to push themselves forward to out run the enemy pirate ship and achieve a high score.
My role was to design and create the protagonist, cosmetics, enemy, UI elements and title screen. Assets were all hand drawn and produced in photoshop with design made specifically so that the joints could be animated in the future.
